About Katy Bishop

Katy Bishop Welcome, and thanks for getting to know me!

Color and texture are my tools to define and express emotional beauty. I find that alcohol inks and acrylics, often with texture, give me the palette I love.

Early art education at Chicago's Art Institute began my pathway to use the arts to enhance other's lives and my own. At the Art Institute, I worked in oil, pastels, watercolor and charcoal.

After college graduation, I became part of creative teams, producing film for many many years...and that was quite rewarding. But now is my time to work alone and share my creations.

As a member of the Los Angeles Art Association, I am committed to bringing visual joy to others. It is more than expressing myself....it is a huge feeling of giving and gratitude.

My art explores life in motion. The dynamics of pigments with the shapes and curves I create give me space for my expressions.

Abstract visual artwork is the perfect medium to for me to communicate emotions, feelings and ideas that cannot be expressed well in words. I want to bring upbeat, inspiring emotions to the forefront and put smiles on people's faces.

My inspirations come from the beauty I see around me. Sometimes it’s a memory of a beautiful landscape view. Sometimes a dream brings forward an inspiration Or an emotion I'm experiencing at the moment creates a colorful expression.

I hope you feel the inspiration and emotion in each artwork.

CV

My high school scholarship to the Chicago Art Institute was the start of my artistic journey. Oils, watercolors, charcoal sketching and pastels techniques were the mediums that we explored while focusing on portraits, still-life and landscapes. The scholarship program was every Saturday, year-round, for high school juniors and seniors, and I had two marvelous years there, thanks to my mother’s support and encouragement. She, in fact, sourced out this opportunity.

After college graduation, my long career in the film business producing story-telling images was very fulfilling and creative. It was great to create as part of a team whether I was producing TV commercials or small budget feature films.

I married, was widowed, married again. A wonderful son came into our lives, but then a divorce. Lots of emotions in my personal life and lots of work in my career. Sometimes I felt like I had no time for myself. Sometimes I felt like there was no way to communicate my thoughts and feelings.

At the same time, I wanted to find my own artistic expression. Sketching, painting from photos, pottery, photography, and jewelry design were each fun in their own way, but I couldn’t find that "connection". Nothing gave me a range of expression to show what I wanted to say.

When I found Alcohol Ink techniques, I fell in love with abstracts. Alcohol inks have also influenced my work in acrylics. Now each artwork develops into what I want to say. Sometimes as I had originally envisioned it, but the joy of alcohol inks is that sometimes it takes on a life of its own.

Now each project develops into what I want to say and share with you. I may see a beautiful sunrise, or experience a crazy day. I paint the emotions and hopefully communicate, hopefully create an artwork that speaks. If my artwork gives you pleasure, puts a smile on your face or your heart, I am grateful that I can give you some visual joy.
